We decided to hang our TV and sell the cabinet that it use to be on. Now we have a messy area...any suggestions?

Before and after or rather now and then!

The key to decorating is looking at the composition of the overall room. What are your finishes in the rest of the room? What is the mass or scale of the pieces of furniture in that room as compared to the size of the room? What else do you want to do besides make the TV area look better?

Do you have the tools and the skills to build something like a custom wall unit? That’s what I would do.

The unit would need to be big enough to hold the cable TV box, the DVR whatever electronics you have connected to your TV.

I would make it as wide as the TV.

If you want glass doors on it, then I would go to someplace like IKEA and buy the doors already made and then work backwards on building a cabinet to accommodate the doors .

Or you can buy something from IKEA like a bookcase that’s made to have doors and modify or finish it to taste.

You can mask off an area behind the TV and paint it a darker version of your accent color. The "black hole" of the TV will blend better on a dark background. If that doesn't appeal to you, you can look for black and white art, mat and frame it in black and create a gallery wall around the TV. You can buy various sizes of canvas and do your own version of black and white modern art. If you want a more traditional look there are apps that you can "mirror" a painting from a compatible device to your TV. You may be able to run your wires to the left and blend them along the wood trim and a floating shelf can give your boxes and remotes a place to sit.

Hid the cords, add a shelf for the accessories. Then you will have a neat appearing space that you can decorate.

In today's post was a woman that used crates to make storage. TV's these days are not heavy. I think you should stack good crates. Paint and decorate to please your self. You would have plenty of room to hold to hold your electronics and more. I do not think what you have under it now goes with the tv. The crates would hide the wires. One side of the crates to the woodwork, and it will stair step it on other side to off set. Cut a small whole to reach your outlet. Hope this gives you some ideas.

Go to amazon.com and type in wall decals and browse until you find something you like. There are things from decals that really look like barnwood to delicate oriental lotus blooms and everything in between.

Layout your framed picture collection or art and scatter (neatly aka controlled chaos) in a pattern you like. You can hide the cords with pvc and attach said pvc with painted brackets to give it an aged, industrial look (think silver spray paint, and a piece of sandpaper) You can create a funky yet classy gallery wall to hide the bland and boring.

Hi Susan, you can put a floating shelf up for the Tv items you have on the little stand there, put one below the TV. You could even put a smaller one on either side of the TV to balance and tidy the look.

Or build your own to suit your needs
