I've changed to Tide laundry detergent, used baking powder and ammonia nothing seems to work. I do not overload and clothes are immediately placed in dryer after wash.

  • when i had this problem it ended up being the dryer. I bought a new (used) one and suddenly my clothes smelled a lot better.

Start by cleaning your washing machine with white vinegar on the hottest setting (or use the "sanitizing" setting). Be sure you have emptied the "trap" usually located in the front/lower portion of the washing machine, most of the newer ones have them.

I have recently changed over from Tide to Persil ProClean laundry detergent (WalMart carries it and it is less expensive) and have completely eliminated the sour odors, living in Florida that says something, especially with towels.

Another suggestion is after using your washing machine leave the lid slightly open to allow it to dry. In my case I have a front loader and I prop it open with a small piece of wood - I do not have little ones,, but if you do DO NOT DO THIS. If you do have a front loader be sure to take out the detergent/softener tray, clean thoroughly, and place on top of the machine until your next use. I have learned there can be all sorts of mold lurking in there! I also quit using liquid softener and use wool balls or tennis balls in the dryer. For some reason softener leaves a rank smell and huge build up in the washer and that sure cannot be good for you, your clothes or the environment.

    Good luck!

Yes vinegar is your friend here. Use an old big towel to help scrub inside and kosher salt will help it scrub too. Rinse in hot water cycle

Is it a front loader? I had the same problem. Clean the machine well with vinegar and then ad 1/4 cup to your reg laundry routine.

Thanks everyone! I pretty much have tried all of these suggestions with the exception of cleaning out the trap. Cannot seem to find one. I appreciate all of your help!
