How can I cover old ugly vents?

I live in an old home that no longer has central air or heating. But there are several vents in the floors that I would like to cover up and make them flush with the floor. Anyone have ideas on how to cover them? They have registers in them now but they're gaudy, some are broken, and they let air through.

I've lived with those old floor vents, they have a metal lip underneath that sits on a wooden ledge usually. I would take the vent out and put in some 2x4s across the opening so your plywood with sit flush with the floor, you might be able to put some joist hangers on each side of joists to slid the 2x4s into. I would use 3/4" plywood on top, depending on your flooring that will go over this, the plywood should be added low enough so the whole thing will be level and flush with existing flooring.
If you can't cover them, you could try buying more decorative vent covers. They make some really beautiful ones these days!
You could replace them with new vents. Close them and spray foam on the back then trim them before reinstalling, that way the floors still nice but no more cold air
