Can you help me troubleshoot my Black & Decker sander?

Why do the loops pull off the sandpaper and stick to the hooks on the sander? This is a relatively new sander. I had new sandpaper on the unit and this was the second day of sanding. Suddenly the sandpaper flew off. The only difference was that the first day I was sanding wood. The second day I was sanding wood filler. The sander is similar to this one. Sometimes off brand sandpaper pads have smaller Velcro loops and won't hold. Harbor Freight products are noted for this. If actually Black and Decker return for faulty paper.

Thank you Kelli. I thought that might be the case. I got the sander as a gift and it came with some packs of sand paper. Now I know the answer. Thanks!

I agree with Kelli. Low cost or off brand paper can do this. Also if the paper is old the adhesive holding the loops can fail.

Thank you William. As I told Kelli, I thought that might be the case. I got the sander as a gift and it came with some packs of sand paper. Now I know the answer. Thanks!

  • You can also check the velcro on the sander has not been damaged. I thought I had a sanding disc on the bottom which I did not. I kept using the sander oblivious to this and it wore the velcro down. We all can do silly things I always buy the bulk cheap discs but I do get a few jobs out of them

Thanks Anita. The sander is pretty new so the velcro/hook part should be okay. I managed to clean a lot of the loop mess off the hooks so we'll see if that helps. If not, I'll have to get a new one.

  • Hi, Linda!

It definitely sounds like a bad batch of sandpaper... I would recommend Diablo or Gator Grit and see if one of those brands sticks better! I hope this helps!

Thank you Cher. I just saw Gator Grit at Lowe's. I only have a little bit left to do with the low grit so I'll definitely get that brand for my next project.
