I am assuming that you want to do more than just put an image of R2D2 onto a stocking shape. First you need to acquire a picture of R2D2. If you can find a coloring book image of R2D2 that would give you a good pattern to follow. You may even be able to enlarge that image and use it to cut out your fabrics. Measure the height and width of the image and keep that ratio in your work. For instance, if your image measures 3 inches high and 1.5 inches wide then your R2D2 should be twice as tall as it is wide.
When selecting your denim from you stash you can use the reverse side to add a new color. I suggest that you cut out the main body in your lightest shade. You can sew assorted fabrics or use iron-on patches to create the various rectangles, squares, and circles. You can add additional detail with buttons and piping.
If your plan is to go big I suggest you keep the dome seperate from the ”body. “ to create the opening. You could connect them with a zipper to close it up after filling and you may need to reinforce the top with some Wonder Under, to get it to hang better. When you attach the detailed front to your backing denim there is no need to hide your seams because denim unravels to create a nice fringe to add texture to your artwork. If you are planning on a smaller version you can just leave it open at the top like a traditional stocking, and add detail with Sharpies.
