Handyman would be cheaper but cheaper isn’t always better. I wouldn’t allow him to do the job unless he’s licensed and insured. Definitely check some references too.

  • a handyman could probably do it as long as there's already electrical available in the location you want the fan. Good luck!

In most locales a certified electrician must install wired in electrical applications. They must evaluate the current wiring for being in good repair, and alsoable to support the increased power draw of the fan, in addition to the light fixture on the circuit. Should a short occur and result in damage or fire, your homeowner's and/or fire insurance can be voided. Pay a little more upfront for long term peace of mind. If you have a mortgage you are also

obligated to follow legal installation laws in your state. When you go to sell all the electrical must be installed by licensed contractors or you may have to have installation redone by a licensed contractor before sale! It's important to checkout the background & qualifications of any contractor for any project you plan to do to your home. DIY is great, & saves money, but these rules & restrictions have been created for your protection. Be certain you are in the right, & have the correct certified & bonded contractors before beginning any project.

  • If you don't hire a licensed electrician you don't have a leg to stand on if something isn't right. Always only hire licensed professionals. Here is how to hire. Always do your homework.

I agree. Hire an electrician to get it done right if you don't want to do it yourself. Replacing a ceiling fan could be done by a handyman who has done it before.
