How can I take down and replace bathroom tiles?

My husband is buying a home that was built in 1973 and the bathroom has tile walls. I was wondering if we could pull the tile down without having to worry about coming in contact with any lead. We want to make our bathroom more modern.

Tina. Our house was built in 1905 and we bought it in 1971, know how much time I spent worrying about lead and/or asbestos ?. . . zero. At what I am sure would be prohibitive costs you could have someone come out and do a lead abatement test.
Our house was built in the 1960's and it had pink tile in the bathroom and I painted the tile white about 19 years ago.. We removed all of the tile this year....the man that took it down, did wear a dust mask but only because of the dust from the tile and grout. After the tile was down, he had to sand the wall to make it smooth before he painted it all. Our wall tile went up the wall about 4 feet.
There should not be any lead in the grout, but I would wear a mask anyway in case you disturb the paint that may be behind the tiles, if there is any. Working with grout can be dusty so you should err on the side of caution anyway.
There should be no lead in this demo work.
You can wear any of the masks that are NIOSH 95 or 100. Like a N95 or N100.
The P95’s and P100’s are for Petroleum based dust.
Either will work and wear eye protection.

if you do that new underlayent needs to be put down or your install will go to a dissaster after some time
