You could cover them with contact paper, then when you get tired of it, pull it off and put on another pattern.

You will need to open the surface, like anything else with sanding or a non-sanding chemical agent, then you can cover with paint, veneer, or pretty much anything your heart desires. Fill any pits or problems before refinishing, as it is easier before than after!

Rustolium Countertop Paint is wonderful. It's made to paint formica countertops so it should adhere to you cabinets just as well.

I painted my countertops 10 years ago and they are just now needing a redo.

There is a limit of 10 colors that you can choose from but they are ok. Be sure the surfaces are totally clean. Use a small foam roller. Do NOT try any touch up for 24 hours. But it goes on amazingly easy and covers totally with one coat.

Are they “foil” aka Melamine or are they real plastic laminate “Formica”?

If the finish is as thin as a sheet of paper, not a composite that is 3/32” thick, then it’s Melamine.

Melamine cant be sanded and has to be cleaned with TSP solution.

Where it’s already worn through, the MDF underneath it will mushroom when paint is applied to it. So it has to be sealed, filed and resealed in worn corners or gouges.

Clean it well with a degreaser and water. Once clean and dry, you can paint using a chalk-based paint.
