Old Bookshelves Become Fresh and New
I LOVE a good thrifted find...garage sale, flea market or curbside I don't care, just give me the junk! Here is how you can easily update a thrifted find into something fun and useful!
I found two of these, one at a garage sale and one at a thrift store. I actually see them all the time, so you should be able to find them too! If not you can still take these ideas for other items! I started by painting them. You can use any old chalk type paint or even latex paint in the color of your choice.
I wanted to use one for my son's room, which is a sports theme. I pre-drilled a hole in the shelf and the baseball with a drill bit slightly smaller than the long screw I was using to hold the ball to the shelf. I used a screw that had threads all the way to the top. Screwing from the inside of the shelf towards the outside I attached the baseball. Before screwing the baseball I laced the screw with Gorilla Glue for a firm hold once attached. Then I touched up the screw head with paint to hide it.
It makes for a precious little book shelf space on my son's desk. And for the other shelf I came up with the idea below!
All you have to do is imagine what else something could be and give it a new life! Inexpensive decor is just your imagination away! Here is the next one:
For this I glued some other garage sale finds on the ends for sweet decor. I used it to hang scarves. You could use it as a towel rack and I am sure a million other things! If you like these ideas then wait till you see how I made these old Reader's Digest books into new decor...

I love the color and the way you repurposed it. I was given one identical to it and cut the top pieces off even with the table top. Sanded it down and painted it in a beautiful coastal color and it turned out awesome.
