What can I place inside this planter in order to use less soil?
This planter is 18" wide and 32" high. What do you put inside this container so you do not have to use so much soil? Empty water bottles?
If you want to use less dirt in your planter you can fill it partially with styrofoam packing peanuts before adding dirt. I have also used crushed pop cans and plastic bottles as well as pea rock. I also tried using loose polyester batting that you can use to stuff pillows. All work to save buying so much potting soil! I plant different varieties of flowers in my big pots and they grow beautifully as long as I know how much dirt their root systems will need to develop.
You could also put a smaller inverted planter in it before filling the larger planter with dirt.
I did not have packing peanuts on hand but I had styrofoam that came in a recent purchase. I chopped it up and filled my HUGE pot. First I covered the bottom with a filter to hold in the dirt, then the foam pieces, then put in the dirt. Then I replanted my beautiful geranium. It is doing great and the pot is much lighter now. I have to bring it in for winter months.
If you are looking to "fill" before adding a plant you can use rocks or mulch. Also, you can turn a smaller pot upside down in the bottom to take up space.
