Thump it with your fingers. It changes sound/pitch.
Check the underside where it has been sitting on the ground. It should be a nice yellow color. If that spot is still white it's not ready to pick.Thumping also helps!

The resting spot on the bottom should be a creamy yellow. When you thump it, it should sound hollow. I eat a watermelon a week year round.

When thumped, it should make a hollow sound. If it is discolored on one side it should be a really good melon.
