What kind of wood is it? You could sand it down then paint it. I would finish it with a coat of varathane.
Hi Debbie,
Painting walls is one thing, but there are a few different measures you need to take in order to ensure that your furniture-painting project is successful.
Expert Painting Tips: Latex paint comes in a variety of sheens, including flat, low sheen or satin, semigloss acrylic latex and oil-based enamel. Oil-based paint can be used for both exterior painting and interior trim work; it's also very durable and easy to clean.
Depending on the finish that is on it now, I would sand and give them a coat of primer. If you have a paint sprayer the job would be much quicker and latex paint works nicely. I have a (affiliate link) HomeRight Paint Sprayer and it works nicely for big projects like this. Especially if you are painting chairs. They are so time consuming with a brush. But if this is your only project it may not be worth the money. Latex paint work really well and if you get a satin or eggshell finish you should be able to wipe it down without any problems. Good luck!

Use a roller
Ideally, you're going to sand it enough to rough up the finish. Then use a good primer like BIN from Zinsser. This will help the paint stick and block any wood grain or knots from bleeding though. This is especially an issue if you're painting oak. You might consider using countertop paint for the tabletop- Since it's going to be wiped so often.
