How do you cut stainless steel

  • You should be able to use a circular saw with a diamond blade, Betty.

    Betty,

Is the backsplash installed or are you trimming it before installation? Cover the area you are cutting with painter's tape or something similar (if it did not already come with a protective peel off coating) and then draw your cut line on the tape. Use a sharp object like a utility knife or nail and a straight edge to score the cut line as deeply as possible. This will not cut the metal, but provide a cutting guide. If the material is not installed, then you can use tin snips. If the gauge (thickness) is more than the snips can handle, then a small grinder, Dremel, or oscillating tool with the correct cut-off wheel/blade will work as well. Those tools can be purchased cheaply from Harbor Freight and sources like Facebook Marketplace. You could probably rent them if you do not want to invest in purchasing. If the material is already installed, then the Dremel or oscillating tool are easier to maneuver in tight spaces than the grinder.
