What is a complimentary backsplash for butcherblock countertop?

We are building. I have chosen butcher block counter top and would like suggestions for a backsplash.

Subway tile would look amazing. But I would take a piece of counter top and a paint sample and hold it up to different back splash samples to see what you love. I think picking out back splash would be so fun!
what are kitchen colors ? what is style? country,french country,rustic,modern,classic,retro? anything/colors goes with wood of butcher block counter tops metal,tile,natural stone,more wood,glass to name a few materials......need a few more hints what you are thinking the lists are endless
What color are the cabinets and flooring?
One newer ideas of interest to me is a fireback as a decorative backsplash is to use that near the stove cooktop. It was on an episode of This Old House. Depending upon your lighting and decor sometimes a pop of black is really attractive in a room. They come in various sizes, quite heavy need to be mounted to the wall, they used an adhesive mount on TOH.

Appliance color will play into this decision. I would either go with a bold color or metal finish.
