Are you talking about exterior brick walls or indoor wallboards?
There are special lime washes for that German Smear whitewashed brick look.
For interior walls that i wanted to lighten, I have just used white latex paint. I just watered down the paint then used it to "scrub" my skip troweled walls. You can paint white over a color then wipe off most of it for a glazed effect.
