To make a good cleaner similar to what is sold for commercial use, combine in a bucket (test on inconspicuous area first to be sure carpet dye is permanent):
For area rugs or small carpeted area, pour into a spray bottle and spray small area to be cleaned. Scrub with brush. Rinse and blot dry. Allow to air dry and then vacuum.
I use vinegar in my carpet cleaner. It works well and the scent fades. You can add a couple of drops of blue Dawn if it's a very bad stain.
