I want to clean an entire area rug, not just remove spots. There has to be a home solution; I just know it! Thanks.

To make a good cleaner similar to what is sold for commercial use, combine in a bucket (test on inconspicuous area first to be sure carpet dye is permanent):

    • 2 tablespoons of liquid laundry detergent
    • ¼ cup of liquid all-purpose cleaner
    • 1 scoop of OxiClean
    • 1 teaspoon of fabric softener
    • 1 gallon of hot water

For area rugs or small carpeted area, pour into a spray bottle and spray small area to be cleaned. Scrub with brush. Rinse and blot dry. Allow to air dry and then vacuum.

I use vinegar in my carpet cleaner. It works well and the scent fades. You can add a couple of drops of blue Dawn if it's a very bad stain.
