We used odd lumber and built basically a box. The most important thing is that it is secured, especially the platform. You can go rustic or even sophisticated. If you don't have much experience with building, you might want to purchase some plans.

    Janet,

There are several techniques depending on whether or not you are constructing this in a single tree or between multiple trees. It used to be so simple and now you have to take into account liability should someone be injured in the tree house. Consult with your insurance company. Make sure it will not be something your neighbors might see and complain about. You may or may not need a permit in your location. I built one for my children many years ago using ideas and techniques from books before youtube existed. Jean/David Stiles and Pete Nelson are good resources. They are available on Amazon and are not expensive.

Safety is your most important consideration! Your skills must be such that you already know basic building techniques, material strengths, etc. Your platform and railings must all be completely securely fastened and work with the particular tree. You've got to take into account "widow makers" in the tree above you or neighboring trees. Wind and snow factors. Tree growth. Rain infiltration and material rot.

The most important factor will be your knowledge and skill at building the supports to hold the platform up and securely in the tree without damaging the tree. I also recommend you read some of the building consideration/techniques that Pete Nelson uses.
