How to Make Large Swirly Frames

These frames are super-easy to make... They are cut in one piece using a jigsaw with the center cut out and recessed using a router (which is optional). These frames are perfect for displaying favorite photos and can be finished however desired!

I used a 2' x 4' sheet of 1/2" MDF to make two frames. I cut a pattern out of a piece of kraft paper and traced it on the MDF. I marked the position of the center opening using a scrap piece of 1x3 lumber. I drilled a hole big enough for my jigsaw blade in each corner of where the center of the frame would be cut out. I inserted the jigsaw and cut out the center.

I cut the piece along the curvy lines to create the outside of the frame. I also used a router to create a decorative edge on the outside of the frame.

I also cut a rabbet with the router along the inside opening of the frame to allow for glass.

I lightly sanded the frame, then primed and painted it a dark grey. Using the router is completely optional. The center opening is also completely optional: glass or Plexiglas can be secured to the front of the frame with a photo or favorite quote behind it!
