How can I remove cigarette smoke odors from a purse?

I am taking care of an elderly lady's financial affairs. I have brought her purse home. She is a heavy smoker and the room I have her purse in smells. I have taken the items out and put the purse on the clothes line to air out, (hasn't helped). But worse, her wallet and check book (leather cover) just smell so bad.

I’ve read that newspapers will take odors out of items. It’s worth a try. Try wrapping each item in newspapers and stuff the purse with it also. Good luck!
I spray items with the Fabric Odor Remover, I use the Dollar Tree X-tra strength one. Put in the sun outside and spray it over and over till the smell is gone.

Leather, being a natural material, retains odours and the toxins from smoke. It sounds to me like the smoke has become embedded into even the smallest items, such as the wallet, as you mentioned.
You can try some of the means that others have suggested, but IMO, it will be next to impossible to entirely remove the smells.
OdoBan is the best thing I've ever used for getting rid of smoke odor.
Yes, OdoBan may be an effective disinfectant for some surfaces, but unfortunately, it cannot be used on some materials, leather being one.
