Remove everything from the area. Tape off mantle and anything you don't want to get painted. Drop cloths around the area. Clean with an all purpose cleaner and a wire scrub brush. Make any repairs with paintable acrylic latex caulk. Once you clean it and everything is dry, use an oil based primer and apply 2 coats. Then you can paint with a water based paint of your choice.
Stone is going to be a lot of work to paint with a brush. I would buy a cheap paint sprayer from Harbor Freight. Their cheap Avanti one, is a great value.
I would use a primer base that is the same as my finish base. As in if water-based, stick with water based. If oil-based, stick with oil based.
Use a roller with a fluffy head like for stucco but beware once you paint it you will have to keep doing it you should just maybe shine them up or put a glittery shine on them .good luck
It's very dark & covers a whole wall in the room. I thought about putting Airstone over the moss rock, but I don't think I can because it's not a flat surface.
