What can I do if the metal center brace of restored bench not fitting?

Replaced all slats in garden bench. Have the braces but having trouble getting center metal brace to fit correctly. Would it help to put weight on the slats to get them to flex some? That way I can at least mark the holes and drill a tap hole. Have done this several time, but never had this problem.

    Hi,

Could you bend the metal strap up a bit to aline? Maybe it has bent a bit due to use......

you can moisten the wood then add weight so it bends to the shape you need it to be

The wood sounds warped maybe try letting it get rained on a little then try again or try when wet

The slats are probably different in size and thickness than the original. If you can bend the brace do so. Sometimes it's just a strip of metal. If not then weigh down the slats to fit the brace.

Thanks for the input. The slats are the same size & thickness as the old ones.

Not strong enough to bend the brace. Think the slats need to be flexed some to get them to meet. Going to try using a clamp to see if I can get the to flex enough to meet.
