you need to level the ground, using a level bar to get it even and smooth down below any grass sod etc. Put down a weed barrier of some sort. You can use weed barrier you buy or simply use card board to completely cover the patio area. Then add sand and lay the flat stones in the sand like a puzzle piece as close to each other as possible. OR put down the stones and use cement to hold them in place. Either way will work, but if you have never worked with cement the 2nd way can be difficult. I do the sand way with just making sure each stone is level and level in relationship to the other stones. Hope this helps, Gwendolyn.
