I recently saw a ladder made with chair back spinals. Get two 2x4's drill holes down both matching up so you can put your dowels in. Glue the holes insert the dowels and let dry. You can then paint, stain or what ever you want. Makes a great blanket rack when leaned against the wall.
Hi Sherry, the ideas listed in the link below may not be as creative as you're hoping to receive, but they may inspire you to think of others. These are mostly about making practical good use of dowels. I'd also think you could create some type of very unique creative artwork piece using several of the dowels in various sizes painted or stained in various colors.
