Patty, I recently did this to my hollow closet door. I used Loctite PL Fast Grab Premium Construction Adhesive (you'll need a caulk gun) the stuff is great! Be sure to clean and dry areas first. Use painters tape to keep in position. I then painted the whole door.

As in making it look like a door with insets? You can use Loctite adhesive to glue your thin wood strips on.
