How do I make a faux leather footstool into a blanket storage box?

Does it already have a lid that lifts for storage.

  No, just an empty space. I can access the interior via a zippered bottom. It will be easy for me make a stable bottom for it.

You are going to need a piano hinge and some plywood to make a top. You will need to attach that to the footstool with matching fabric.
