I use Clorox disposable scrubbers. Letting the cleaner sit and do its job is important. Other cleaners I use are Kaboom and Scrubbing Bubbles. I use vinegar for most cleaning but, I use chemicals in the bathroom, especially the toilet, because I want to make sure it's really clean, considering what we use it for.

Skip the chlorox. It is an OXIDIZING agent, and rust stains require a REDUCING agent, that is the acid. Straight chemistry, The vinegar would likely work much better.

Also, check the back of the toilet. If rust is an issue you MAY have iron bacteria, and a quick look in the back will tell you. a floating mass and slime indicate iron bacteria and HERE, you need Chlorox to kill it, a few squirts from an eye dropper after thoroughly cleaning with a brush as much as you can get, then regularly adding a few drops will stop that.

In water treatment business for 20 years. I know the chemistry.

Here is what I use to clean my entire bathroom. Vinegar is a disinfectant so it will clean the toilet.

Heat up 1 cup of white vinegar, mix in about 1/4 cup of Dawn Premium. Not the dollar store kind, because it is too thin. When mixed, pour into a spray bottle and fill with water. Shake. Spray down the grout and let it sit overnight. In the morning rinse. If you have stubborn stains, spray again. Use this mixture a few times a week. It will keep your grout and tiles clean. Also works wonders in the toilet bowl to keep hard water stains at bay. Oh you only have to heat the vinegar one time when you add the Dawn.

To clean the rust stains Pour 1 to 2 cups distilled white vinegar directly into the rusted toilet bowl or

Sprinkle a layer of lemon soft drink mix over the stained areas of the toilet bowl and in the water.or

Pour 1 to 2 cups bottled lemon juice into the rusted toilet bowl, and allow it to stand overnight.
