The easiest thing for pressed wood is paint. Sand it down really good and then a nice coat of paint in a solid color, or you can distress your paint, depending on the look you are going for. You can use paint to make a wood grain look as well. The new handles are easy to get at a hardware store. You can use rope, drawer handles or knobs. It would be more helpful for ideas if you posted a photo of the cart.

Remove hardware . Wipe down good with TSP. Lightly sand or use liquid sandpaper. Paint with latex enamel, or lightly spray paint. Two coats is best. Replace hardware with new or spray paint.] it then replace.

Farmhouse Paint would be my choice! No sanding or prep required, other than to make sure the piece is not dirty. A quick wipe-off, and start painting. This chalk paint just glides on; it is so fast and easy. i would probably 'wet distress' it since it isn't wood. This is simply letting the paint dry maybe 10 min, then use a paper towel to blot off some paint on the edges and anywhere you want to see 'wear'. Best wishes on your project!
