Can I salvage an old door or do I need to buy new?

My front door is made of metal, has panels and is 35 years old. It no longer holds paint and cracks and chips even though it's been sanded and prepped by a professional. Any ideas or must I buy a new door? Thanks

Hi. No need to buy a new door. New pro, now that's another story.

    What has probably happened is:

    1. a water based paint was applied over an oil -- you can apply an oil over a water based but not the other way around, or
    2. incorrect primer was used,or
    3. not an exterior paint was used.

    Now:

    1. Take the paint entirely off. This is not as bad as it seems. I use a marine paint remover (gloves, protective eye gear a must).
    2. Now prep and paint with either an alkyd, oil or prime and acrylic (tougher than latex) exterior paint.

    Good luck!

Hello. Proper prep is essential. Perhaps - possibly they were missed in previous applications?
