If the upholstery is good, you can paint them. You can get fabric paint at Micheals. They even have spray fabric paint. But what I would do is buy ANY COLOR latex paint and add a fabric medium into it. Try liquitex fabric medium or ceramcoat textile medium. Just google these 2 products and follow the directions on the bottle to mix with paint. I haven't done this yet so I don't have one of my own posts for you but I have thought about doing it myself and I would use these products. I love being able to use my own color especially when it comes to home decor. good luck!

If the upholstery is torn in any way, I would re-upholster. You can use my tutorials for upholstering:

Then check out how to re-apply the new fabric by stapling. There are also tips on how to re-upholster to get that really tight fabric fit in this post as well:

  • I swap out the fabric on chairs and stools all the time. If you choose that route I recommend using a fabric like Sunbrella, or something comparable. It really stands up to the spills and wear and tear that kitchen stools take.

Seats are very easy to recover. Just remove seat, there should be screws underneath to hold it on, wrap new fabric and staple the fabric on. Have fun.

The fabric in the first picture is too badly worn away and stained to be magically transformed with any paint. These damaged spots and sections will continue to show through any paint you try to cover them up with. The paint will not adhere properly, will look blotchy, and the overall outcome will be less than attractive.

To change the color of the old fabric, remove it, and replace with new fabric.

This is not re-upholstering, which is completely replacing the inside forms and stuffing as well. This is re-covering, which is a lot easier.

I painted lots of different fabric chairs with chalk paint.I used a watered down coat first and then another couple of coats after, normal, not watered down.Dry between coats.Very happy with how they turned out, sort of a fake leather look.
