How can I seal a fireplace that is no longer in use?

Want to fill a 1930s all metal fireplace. Needs to be sealed as well. Something with style but ... No candles.

You can brick or tile the area. I love this but you don't so I would probably do tile in an accent and leave the brick surround.
Did you know you can have the fireplace declined and install a small set of gas logs and actually use it? We did that to ours and loved it. Also fireplaces increase your property value. You have a great summer cover. If you close it up be sure to save it. I have a few from other places and painted it copper and used it as a backsplash over my stove.

Back in the day, where I grew-up in the deep South fireplaces were often closed up when not in use during warm weather months. A pannel was made to fit the opening. It was often trimmed out with moldings, wood appliques, and painted or stained to match the room decor. Some were simple and utilitarian others quite elegant and decorative. Incorporated into the design would be handholds or handles to facilitate ease of insertion and removal. Maybe something like this would suit your needs.
