What is the best paint and clear coat for wooden kitchen counter tops? Mine are from the 70's and I like them. Want to paint them again but last time the clear coat didn't protect them

They sell paint and clear coats speficically for countertops at most hardware stores.

    These are real wood, yes?

There’s coatings for butcher block tops and I’ve read that Watco makes a good one.

You know that any old remaining finishes will need to be sanded off first.

If you are painting the countertops, you could use epoxy to seal them! I painted a piece of plywood for a bathroom countertop white, then flood coated it with epoxy and ran some gray paint through it for veins. It turned out amazing! You can use the epoxy clear just to seal the paint job you already did, or add colorant, but it makes it completely waterproof and maintenance free!

You'll really wanna seal the wood on all sides, otherwise the moisture will eventually lift off any finish and even introduce mold. There's also silicon caulking for areas constantly exposed moisture.

You might try polycrylic, using several coats. You do want to make sure that your paint and sealer is food safe.
