If you have a small yard go vertical. We do this with fencing, pergola and a grape vine structure. Our yard is about 20' deep and maybe 60' wide. We have one small garden space on the sunny side, next to our back porch entrance.

I would do 2 things first:

1. Take a walking tour of your neighborhood and take photos of landscapes you like where the yard size and configuration is like yours
2. Cut out photos of yards/landscapes you like from magazines and on-line and use bits and pieces of the areas you like as inspiration.

You can also go to public gardens and nurseries and copy their layouts - and take advantage of their sales people/guides who can tell you what grows well in the conditions you have to work with.
