Would a tall clear crystal vase look good on a white mantle?

there is a huge mirror behind it from mantle to ceiling. Of course I would either put a tall pillar candle in it or a flower arrangement

Why not? Put it up and see if you like the look. If you don't, use it elsewhere. I change out some of my decor for the season or holiday. Keeps things fresh and you don't get bored.
It would look great. I would avoid 100% symmetry, as our eyes will look for the flaw.
Add another 2 elements, to make a 3 part composition. Preferably glass or the color of your candle/flowers.
You can add color to the vase with colored candles, candle rings, colored rock, colored moss, etc. if you are looking to add just a touch of color to show it off. It will look nice regardless of what you choose.
For decorating, always use odd numbers for accessories. I would think it's okay but if you want color, you can do as you suggested or maybe colored sand or marbles.
