How do you remove Behr deck over paint?

We tried deck stripper but this did not work. We had the deck boards replaced since they were in bad shape, my hubby is now in the process of sanding what is left. He has been working on this all week.

Boy do I understand your problem!

We have a gianemorous deck that was built in 2015. We made the choice of using a BEHR solid stain which is much like a paint. The can rated it to last 7 years. Figuring with this rating this would be the best alternative for our deck that has a heavy sun exposure -offering lots of protection.

This finish has been failing every year also requiring REapplication-after experiencing adhesion troubles and mildew over the past two years.

Our problems were with the BEHR solid deck sealer product. But last year -we called the customer support line with our frustration and we were provided with individualized detailed cleaning surface prep advice with application instruction support and complete product replacement of deck cleaner and stain.

Imho—I will say that we have a elevated front deck- a rear deck- boat dock and a shed and the more transparent sealers seem to look and last the best versus the longer rated thicker solid type paint type sealers with our particular region and sun exposure.

Sadly once the solid stain is in place —- it’s a lot of work to get it 100% off- to go to an alternate sealer type. My husband is severely regrets putting a solid stain on the new 2015 deck. In hindsight we should have done composite or semitransparent like we have on the boat dock. We have SIKKENS on the shed and thats the longest lasting and most expensive sealer and has lasted 7 years...so far!

It might be worthwhile to give your sealers company a call and see if they can offer any assistance or compensation.

You are on the right track Linda! Sanding is the right way to remove this nasty product! I used a belt sander for the long boards and then a palm sander for along the edges along the house where I couldn't use the belt sander. I had to change the sandpaper frequently and it took me days to do a 12x24 deck. I could not get all of the stain out of some deep weathered cracks. Once I was finished sanding I power washed everything and let it dry for a few days. I used an oil based stain to complete my deck and it was the best thing I have ever used. No paint peeling or bubbling. It has simply faded in color over time and is now just losing it's water repelling properties after 3 years. I had to order this stain online and have it sent to my home since it is not available in my area. I will never again use anything but this product! https://www.armclark.com
