Remarkably, a post about this appeared on today’s Hometalk daily email. Using salt with your regular Windex, vinegar, ammonia, or other glass cleaner adds an abrasive to the process, which helps remove built up oils, bug parts, and mud. You can add up to 4 oz. of salt into 16 oz. of liquid, shaken until dissolved. You then spray the windows as usual, and wipe with paper towels or clean rags until dry. Caution: you must wipe all the solution off when drying or salt crystals will stay on the window, leaving something else to clean. I have used salt to clean cut glass and decorative salt and pepper shakers, which can get pretty grimy with daily use in the kitchen, and never had a scratch. But if you live near an ocean or gulf and had high winds blow the saltwater across the windows and outdoor furniture, you know how powerful that can be in stripping the paint right off a wall. salt leaves a film on windows well anything not sure thats what you want on your windows using straight rubbing alcohol is best/cheapest/easieest it dries ASAP no streaks or smears put liberally on clean wash cloth (no fabric softener on it leaves smears/streaks) and do not use paper towels they also are coated or have chemicals to increase absorbancy but will leave streaks and smears--wipe outside one direction and inside another so you can see anywhere you have missed.
