This money-saving, all-natural liquid hand soap is made with vegetable glycerin and inexpensive bar soap. It contains a blend of essential oils which gives it a sweet and spicy mulled cider scent. Read on to find out how to make your own homemade liquid hand soap.

This economical recipe will yield 4 large mason jars of liquid soap from one bar of soap.

You will need:

  • all-natural bar soap
  • vegetable glycerin
  • essential oils (cinnamon bark, sweet orange and clove)
  • water
  • Optiphen or other non-toxic preservative

For exact measurements, please check out our blog post here.

Grate the bar soap on a large cutting board. Heat 15 cups of water in a large stock pot on high heat until hot.

Add the grated soap to the hot water and stir frequently. After the soap shavings are melted, add the vegetable glycerin.

Let cool for 30 minutes before adding the essential oils and the preservative. At this point, the mixture will still be thin and runny but don't panic.

Cover and let sit overnight. In the morning, the mixture will be thick and gelatinous.

Using sterilized handheld beaters, mix your liquid soap thoroughly before transferring the soap to mason jars using a funnel.

You can also use a funnel to transfer your liquid soap to your decorative soap dispensers.

This homemade mulled cider soap is perfect for use in both your kitchen and bathroom.

The special combination of essential oils, including cinnamon bark and sweet orange, will create a warm and spicy aroma.

What is vegetable glycerin and where do I find it? Is it the same thing as regular glycerin? How long does it last without the preservative?

Hi Beth, vegetable glycerin is a clear liquid typically made from coconut, palm or soy bean oil. It adds moisturizing properties to the hand soap. You can find out where we purchased it by going to our blog post which is linked at the end of this post. (Not sure we can add links in comments). Oh, and we don't recommend skipping a preservative. We did some experiments and DIY products can and will grow mold within a week, if they're water based. Good luck!
