How/where do I end a subway tile backsplash in the kitchen?

So do you normally install the backsplash tile flush with the end of the countertop or flush with the outside edge/end of the upper cabinetry? My countertop is not vertically even with the cabinetry and runs about an inch longer .

I recently tiled my backsplash and ran into the same problem, not knowing which way to end the tile! I ended up choosing to end it with the cabinets, when I held the tiles up each way, I thought it looked a little silly going out to the end of the countertop. Here's a picture of the area! Hope this helps!
The rule of thumb is do not stop on an outside corner.
You could end with grout at the end that’s how my kitchen was done
You are meant to go the the end of the counter.

If you upper and lower cabinets are aligned with those. If they aren't align the with the cabinet closest to the sub way tile.
I'd go to the end of the countertop.
I went with even with the countertop. I used bull nose tiles on the ends to make a finished look.
There are "rules" about this but I'm a bit of a rule breaker and will suggest you do what you think looks best and makes you happy. If you can temporarily stick a few tiles up just to see, step back to take a look, then go from there.
Start at outside edge of cabinet and work backwards, so any part tile will be at the inner edge.
