Diane, they not only have fabric paint now, they also have fabric spray paint! You will need to remove a cushion of that is what you paint, or if you do a whole piece of furniture remove anything like cushions or seats. You did not say what you are painting that is fabric. Here are some tutorials:

Are you looking at doing a smaller design piece instead of the entire surface? If so, you can mix in fabric medium to make paint be more playable.
