When we decided to adopt, we knew two of our kids would need to share a room which means we needed to convert a closet for one to make room for two! We wanted to do the project ourselves so we drew up a plan and went to the home improvement store to gather the supplies for this quick and simple DIY project. https://simplepurposefulliving.com/diy-closet-organization-system/

We started with a builder-grade closet that didn't maximize storage or the space. We made a plan to divide the closet in half with a vertical cube bookshelf and then place two hanging rods on each side to provide ample storage for two kids.

We measured the height and width of our closet so we knew what dimensions we were working with. We have standard 8 foot ceilings in our house so we knew we could go up 96 inches tall with the middle bookcase.

We found 3 cube bookcases that were 44 inches each so we purchased two of them. Together, they totaled 88 inches when stacked on top of each other.

We would reuse the existing metal shelf but we would need another metal shelf so we could have two shelves on each side of the closet and we would cut them to fit.

After emptying the closet completely, we built the 3 cube shelves and then stacked the, on top of one another. We secured them by first screwing them together (4 screws like show in the above photo). We then secured them to the wall on the top and bottom with L brackets.

We then measured the width of each side of the closet and cut the metal closet shelves to fit the space. We placed two shelves on each side. We placed the first shelf 40 inches from the ground and the next shelf 40 inches from the previous shelf. We affixed them with shelf brackets.

The entire project took an afternoon and the closet can store so much more than when we started. Our growing girls have plenty of room to store all their clothes, books and more!
