How to grow ginger in water?

  • Soak the ginger root in warm water overnight to prepare for planting. Fill a shallow, wide plant pot (ginger roots grow horizontally) with rich, well-draining potting soil. Place the ginger root with the eye bud pointing up and cover it with 1-2 inches more of soil. Water lightly.

Hi Abby, hope this helps you out.

Step 1: Leave the ginger in water until you see roots that are 1 to 2 inches long, to propagate in water. Step 2: Wrap the rhizome in wet paper towels and place them in a resealable plastic bag until it develops roots. Step 3: Plant the rhizome directly into the ground after soaking.

The stores coat the ginger with a growth retardant so they won't sprout any time soon, this can be rinsed off or just soak it in water, plant as soon as it starts showing root development.

Before you even get started remember to let the ginger soak over night in a bowl of water to remove any growth retardants on it.

  • I've actually heard that you should try to root it in compost first, then move it to water. The roots need to sprout out first, then you can put it in water and it can stay there indefinitely.
