You can buy inexpensive black frosting in the baking section of the grocery store or walmart. I have done the same. I could not find a true black to dye my frosting otherwise that was also edible.
Wilton makes an frosting colorant for black frosting/icing. It is available at WalMart for less than 2 dollars.
