Is it positioned so that you can build a bookcase under it? Or maybe shelves with doors to put misc. items in? We have a high counter like yours and have stools under it. I find it very uncomfortable to sit for any length of time.

    Hi Cathy,

I agree with Pat, those stools under it play havoc with our legs, so very uncomfortable.

looks like you need a fill in of some sort, a suggestion would be to put a small refrigerator there if that would work...you have power there from an outlet.

Another idea would be to remove the bench, fill in the holes and paint the wall. Maybe this shelf & brackets could be used elsewhere.

    Best to you.

maybe you should add foot rail to keep/prop up feet legs https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=DIY+adding+foot+rail+for+bar+stools since you are shorter put it up higher so its more comfortable you can make it with large wood dowel,Pvc pipe; lower cost than metal pipe

  • Lynn has the perfect solution for you. I would also invest in a couple of swivel seat bar stools with a foot rest. My suggestion would be to go out and shop for them so you can test them and find ones that are comfortable for you. Not something to shop on line for.

I am tall and that is the perfect height for me, and I could go into a long story, but don't want to bore you to tears.

My mom was only 5'1". The rest of us were and are significantly taller. My brother and his wife are both 6'4". Mom chose the chairs and my dad installed a foot rest at a comfortable height for her. We used a copper rail as that we not "in style" but did go with the period and style of the home.

Would you like to use this area more as a space for sitting down, or would you prefer to have it a stand up space only?

If you can spare the floor space, I would install an additional overhanging countertop underneath the present one, at a height that is comfortable for you to use. Having the depth of this new countertop deeper than the present high one, will result two tiers.

That is a breakfast bar made for sitting on bar stools.
