Hi Lisa. You could use ceiling tiles to change the appearance. They come in different sizes and colors. They come in bronze, silver, copper, and they even come with surfaces that you can paint. Check out your local home improvement stores and on Amazon. I watch a lot of home and garden shows on TV. That is where I got the idea from. Good luck Lisa.
