How can I save my rose bushes that are dying?

Our rose bushes are not doing well for the last two years. On the East side they're bad, but on the West side they're doing okay. They are bush and climbers. Losing foliage and are brown leafed. Over fertilized??? The Westies have been treated the same, and are being watered the same. We usually have flowers all summer long, but the last two years they're almost flowerless. Are they just old and need replacing? We are in the desert southwest, but they're being different than previous years.

Treat them for a fungal infection called “rust”. Don’t water them at night, only in the morning. There’s another plant infection in the southwest called Verticulum Wilt that I would check into as well.

Call your County Extension Office and ask them about this.

This fall, I would cut them way back, within 12” of the ground. I would make sure the soil doesn’t have signs of mold or pests.

When I lived in Los Angeles, I had to make myself cut my roses back “for the winter”. It paid off.

I don't have as detailed of an answer as Cheryl - but I agree that it sounds like a fungus!

To make sure take pics and leaves to your local nursery. They are a great resource plus carry what you need to fix your problem.
