My friend wanted to redo her cabinets so that it would match better with her home decor which was rustic, New Mexico style. She was tired of her beautiful rich color cabinets and wanted a more Shabby Chic finish. So we went for it.

This is how they were.

I loved her cabinets but I also understood her wanting a change.

Her helpful hubby removed the doors and drawer fronts and after wiping them down really well with lots of Mr. Clean erasers, we were ready to paint using Behr's Urethane Alkyd enamel which is a water-based paint with oil-based properties.

After it all dried, I started glazing, using a water-based Glaze for Faux finishes mixed with a coffee brown and a small sponge. You press harder in the areas you want more color and then wipe back and forth in an up and down direction until it dries. It dries very quickly so you have to work fast.

Here I am applying the glaze.

It's amazing how much they change after adding the glaze. We loved the look.

After the glaze was done, Mary proceeded to apply the Varathane polyurethane water base clear coat in matte finish with a brush. Of course, during the entire process, we listened to blues :).

And voila! all done. We were thrilled with how they turned out.

So much brighter and it matched perfectly with the back splash and floor.
