How do I keep my petunias from getting leggy?

The stems are now long and have only one bloom at the end. I keep cutting off the dead blooms but they still get leggy.

I cut my petunias back half way through the summer. You don't have blooms for awhile but they come back strong and beautiful.
I agree they needed a more drastic cutback not just deadheading but it's a bit late to do it this season most places. Early-mid July is a good time many places for a cutback. Also, be sure the plants get enough sun. Finally, there are cultivars that tend to stay bushier vs leggy.
