We had to clean all the residue from a heavy smoker in a rental property we owned. I washed everything, including light fixtures. The nicotine stains on the ceilings was the worst. Even lightbulbs had residue, so carefully wipe them down or replace them. It was a process, but when I finished, there wasn't a trace of smell left. Soft surfaces like curtains, rugs, and upholstery absorb odors and had to be cleaned also, so I'm glad most of the furnishings were hers and went with her.
