Have you painted indoor/outdoor carpet? Does it hold up to traffic?

I have a 9x16 sunroom with ugly outdated old indoor/outdoor carpet. I want to paint it but not sure if it will hold up to traffic. Can't take it up because there is so much glue under it that I'd never get all that off the concrete.

    Hi Beverly,

Give it a go with Floor paint, meant to go on to concrete. I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work! Good luck There are a number of colours, so you could make a patterned carpet. If you want it to have a bit of grip, throw/sprinkle sand on as you go.

I think it would be awfully stiff and uncomfortable. Can you use it as a pad and install new carpet over it? People do that all the time with commercial glue down carpet. It works out ok.

Agree with Kelli that the carpet would become very stiff and uncomfortable. Coating the fibres in the carpet with paint will also clog them up, resulting in a carpet surface that will not absorb moisture from bottoms of boots or shoes. The paint on the fibres will likely crack and feel brittle underfoot.

A different idea: Have a carpet cleaning company DYE it. Years ago, i was renting a commercial space but over time the carpet had faded into a lovely lime green. I had it dyed a charcoal and it turned out GREAT ! It was not stiff nor did it have any negative results. Everybody thought it was new! It was very reasonably priced, too.

Wow, Rynn, I have never heard of that but it sounds like a great idea to dye it. I don't think painting will work.
