Do you want to work with the current counter you have, or to replace them? There are kits available for refinishing them, if that's something you might want to try.
Dianna, it sounds as though you're ready to paint or apply some other surface to the counters you have. I would recommend you take a look at a Rustoleum product called "Rock Solid". It is a very durable finish and is available at stores such as HomeDepot and Lowes, etc. Check it out. It may not be the type finish you desire. It provides a rather industrial look, shiny surface and is available in a few colors. Although it often used on garage floors, it looks equally good as a counter top. My daughter used this for a few years before upgrading to quartz counters.
