Make a Feature with them. Make a Porch or a Folly using the Pillars. Climb plants up them, Make an Arch. ................
Oh, how very kewl! I would definitely make them a feature. You need to use plants/shrubs/trees that are native to your growing zone for the most success. Google your city & state along with "growing zone" to find out. From there, you need to keep track of how much sun/shade various locations have and your basic soil type (sandy, clay, rich, muddy???). Once you've written this all down, think about what else you want in the area of the pillars. Is the "grand plan" to have a water feature? Seating? Patio or gazebo?
Most of us don't have the funds to move ahead with a full yard of landscaping all at one time. So, draft out your basic plan of what you'd like to have where eventually so every time you plant something new or expand a bed, you know what you want to accomplish.
I start with the focal point of each new bed as far as size. Living alone, being disabled and older I only have so much energy to invest at one time. So, for example, a first created a nice garden bed along the pathway to my front door. Over the past several years, I have widened areas and it is now probably 3 times as wide as it was when I started. I have put only perennial flowers in all my gardens (along with some occasional annuals/bi-annuals that readily self-sow). I prefer my investments to last!
Keep in mind using different colors, textures and heights with your plants.
ALWAYS check the plastic tabs on anything you're considering buying!!!
These will tell you if it's a perennial or annual, sun/shade requirements and how much water it needs.
When planting, follow the spacing shown on each plant's tab. You want them to fill in but not overcrowd each other. Overcrowding brings watering problems, mold, insects, etc.
